The lady Raiders — with a 9-0 record in leagues so far this year — are looking forward to their APS Championships tomorrow, as many of the swimmers say they are confident.

“I’m just trying to have fun because the season is coming to a close and I don’t think any of us are super worried for the APS Champs,” stated sophomore Varsity swimmer Avery Hill. “We’re of course still practicing hard, but our minds are more on leagues the following week.”

Last year’s team accomplished something that hasn’t been accomplished before: they placed second in leagues. Now, they are trying to take that one step higher.

“As soon as the girls heard that we had taken second, they got pumped up for this season and told me that they wanted to win leagues,” said Coach Girard.  “Since the first practice of the season, the returning girls have said that’s their goal and that’s what we have worked toward all year.”

With 12 years of coaching experience under his belt, Mr. Girard believes he can push the team further than they got last year and believes the girls have a positive outlook on the rest of the season.

“I expect the girls to try their best and put all the training they have done throughout the season to use and to be successful against APS schools,” said Gerard.

As far as the APS championships, many of the girls have said that they strived for what they’ve come to.

“I’m excited for both the APS championships and leagues but I’m more worried about leagues,” said freshman Mercedes Capozzolo. “I want to be a freshman that was a part of the greatest accomplishment in RHS girls swimming.”

The APS championships are tomorrow at 4pm at Rangeview, and EMAC league championships on February 3rd at 5:30pm.
